Patrick Stewart developed sleeping pill ‘dependency’ after first divorce

Patrick Stewart has revealed that he developed a dependency on sleeping pills shortly after his first divorce. In his recently published memoir, “Making It So,” the “X-Men” actor recounted a challenging period in his life following his 1989 divorce from Sheila Falconer. At the time, Stewart was filming “Star Trek” and admitted to relying on sleeping pills to get the rest necessary for his job.

His marriage to Falconer, with whom he had two children, ended partly due to his affair with Jennifer Hetrick, who played Vash on “Star Trek: The Next Generation” alongside Stewart’s Captain Picard.

Panic and profuse sweating Stewart

Stewart eventually made the decision to quit the sleeping pills during a break in filming, but this led to difficulties with sleep. He described waking up in the early hours with panic and profuse sweating, which he had not experienced before.

This challenging period was made even tougher because his children, especially his daughter Sophie, were angry with him for divorcing their mother. Stewart, who was 83 at the time of the memoir, also noted that his Los Angeles home had unsettling experiences, which he believed were due to it being haunted. These experiences included hearing voices, smelling cooking food, and footsteps on empty staircases.

Shadowy male figure

The disturbances were so unsettling that Stewart decided to rent the house to a young couple with a child. Afterward, when the mother reported seeing a shadowy male figure and hearing voices and footsteps, she angrily shouted for the presence to leave them in peace. Surprisingly, the disturbances ceased.

Stewart eventually sold the house and found love again with his third wife, Sunny Ozell, whom he met at a Brooklyn restaurant where she worked as a waitress. They became intimate on their first date and married in 2013, with their longtime friend Ian McKellan officiating the ceremony.
