Parton

Dolly Parton has consistently remained authentic, even when it caused her some difficulties.

In an interview with The Guardian published recently, the singer of “Jolene” disclosed that she drew inspiration for her distinctive and extravagant appearance from a local woman known as the “town tramp.”

This lady was famous for her fashion choices, which included donning high heels and tight skirts, as well as showcasing vibrant red lipstick, long crimson nails, and even having miniature plastic goldfish enclosed within the heels of her high-heeled shoes. Her attire also often featured short skirts and revealing tops.

Escape from conventional norms

Despite others labeling the “town tramp” as “trash,” Dolly Parton found her to be beautiful and saw her as an escape from the conventional norms in her community. However, her preacher grandfather disapproved of the way she dressed and would physically discipline her for it, though Parton was undeterred.

Parton grew up in a town where most women, including her mother and aunts, focused on homemaking and raising children, but she felt that wasn’t her calling. She believed she was meant to entertain and write songs about people, regardless of their life circumstances.

Parton: Extravagant style

As her career soared, her extravagant style, including her hair and rhinestone-adorned dresses, became more prominent. Even though she stands by her fashion choices and the reasons behind them, she acknowledges that it has sometimes hindered her progress. Record executives used to pressure her to change her appearance, thinking it was merely a joke.

Dolly Parton, a Grammy winner at the age of 77, firmly maintains her commitment to staying true to herself. She attributes her unique style to a genuine reflection of her identity, acknowledging that it might have taken longer for her to be taken seriously, but she was unwilling to compromise her authenticity.

Book about her life

Parton’s upcoming book, “Behind the Seams: My Life in Rhinestones,” offers an insightful account of her life and career in the context of fashion and costume, set to be released on October 17.
