Unsinkable Sam, brave cat that was alive even after being on multiple English and German WWII ships that sank

Unsinkable Sam is a story definitely suitable for cat lovers. For the most part, we would often hear the phrase that cats have nine lives. However, in the case of this brave cat, he seemingly did have all his nine lives. There were a number of incidents where the war ships he was on sank, yet he survived without even a single scratch.

According to sources, originally Oscar, the black and white cat became known as “Unsinkable Sam.” His extraordinary journey spans the Nazi Kriegsmarine to the Royal Navy. Sam sails on the ill-fated Bismarck, HMS Cossack, and HMS Ark Royal. Here’s the remarkable part: all three of these ships met their demise, but Sam miraculously survives them all.

Following that, Oscar began on the Bismarck, a Nazi battleship launched in 1939. After a brutal battle with The Prince of Wales, Bismarck sank, with Sam as the sole survivor and a British destroyer rescues him. His name changed to “Unsinkable Sam,” and he continued his service on Cossack, which eventually suffered damage, leading to his rescue once more.

Sam’s journey ends when he retires from sea life and spends his days hunting mice in Gibraltar. His story, though in dispute by some, remains a testament to a cat’s incredible survival amidst wartime perils.

Redditors have theories in relation to how Unsinkable Sam managed to survive all the ships sinking. One user states that there are some cats in old folks homes that can sense those passing away. They speculate that it might be the same for this cat, as every ship he has been on quite literally sank.

Following that, there are several users that joke about the cat’s potential involvement with all the other ships sinking. Users state that it is rather suspicious that the cat remains unscathed while the ships sank. Another funny story is that the last ship Unsinkable Sam was on sank, he had an angry cat face while rescuers were saving him.

However, the cat did eventually pass away in 1955, about 10 years after the end of the second World War. Regardless, not many cats would be as brave as this particular cat as they are generally afraid of water.
