Simple exercise to deal with panic attacks in public spaces

Panic attacks happen to the best of us and sometimes when we least expect it. The Better Health Channel defines a panic attack as an episode of fear stemming from anxiety. It causes tension in the muscles resulting in dizziness and shortness of breath.

Neurology professor Jim Costello shares a simple exercise on what to do when you feel a panic attack coming on outside your home in an Instagram video.

The common hack has always been to hold an ice cube in your hand but if this is not available which would be unlikely when you are out in public, the best thing you can do is to grab you wrist and hold it for 10 seconds and give it a light squeeze.

Panic attacks and a shoulder squeeze

“Then shift over to the other wrist, hold it and give it a light squeeze for about 10 seconds.” He said that grabbing one’s shoulder joints and giving it a nice squeeze is also a good idea.

“What you’re doing is creating a reset in the disruption of the frequency firing and that will calm your system down and bring that anxiety down to a whole new level,” he said.

Many people on Instagram tried the method and said that it really worked for them. One person said that he got random anxiety throughout the day and it really works for him.

In a recent video, rapper Megan Thee Stallion pointed out the need to be aware of your mental health issues and shared the message, “It’s okay not to be okay.”

She said that it’s not always possible to stay strong and urged her fans to talk to others and get help when needed. Someone does care, she says. The rapper has a video in collaboration with the Seize the Awkward organisation where she deals with mental health and other related issues. The website is dedicated to reaching out to people struggling with mental health issues.

“No matter who you are, being vulnerable is what makes us whole,” she says.
