Matthew Perry: “Friends” star passes away at 54

The world mourns the loss of Matthew Perry, one of the adored stars of the iconic ’90s sitcom ‘Friends.’ The actor, who portrayed the sarcastic yet lovable Chandler Bing, was found at an L.A.-area home on Saturday, where he appears to have drowned.

First responders rushed to the scene after a call for cardiac arrest, but despite their efforts, Perry could not be saved. He was 54 years old.

Matthew Perry, a household name

Matthew Perry’s portrayal of Chandler Bing made him a household name. The show, which ran for ten seasons with 234 episodes, remains a classic and a fan favorite, with Chandler’s witty one-liners and unforgettable mannerisms cherished by fans around the world.

While ‘Friends’ was undoubtedly Perry’s biggest claim to fame, he had a prolific career in television, guest-starring and starring in countless shows such as ‘Boys Will Be Boys,’ ‘Growing Pains,’ ‘Silver Spoons,’ ‘Charles in Charge,’ ‘Sydney,’ ‘Beverly Hills, 90210,’ ‘Home Free,’ ‘Ally McBeal,’ ‘The West Wing,’ ‘Scrubs,’ ‘Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip,’ ‘Go On,’ ‘The Odd Couple,’ and more.

Personal struggles

Perry’s immense talent was marred by personal struggles. He battled addiction to drugs and alcohol, specifically Vicodin. His battles with substance abuse took a toll on his health and his career, leading to multiple stints in rehab.

Last year, Perry opened up this painful chapter in his life with the release of his memoir where he candidly detailed the challenges he faced.

In addition to his substance use, Perry also faced health issues, some of which required hospitalization. He underwent emergency surgery due to a gastrointestinal perforation but fortunately recovered.

A legacy of laughter

Matthew Perry leaves behind a legacy of laughter and memorable moments that will continue to resonate with fans. His untimely passing is a tragic loss for the entertainment industry but his work will be cherished for generations to come.
