Nearly two decades have passed since Patrick Dempsey made his debut on the small screen as the charming neurosurgeon Derek “McDreamy” Shepherd in ABC’s Grey’s Anatomy. His journey began even earlier with his endearing role as an outcast in the 1987 film “Can’t Buy Me Love.”
His heartthrob status led to multiple appearances in this publication over the years, and now he’s been crowned Sexiest Man Alive. Reflecting on this honor, the 57-year-old Maine native says, “I’m glad it’s happening at this point in my life.” He added that it is good to be recognised while his ego takes a bump and it gives him the platform to use it for something positive.
Dempsey Center
The Dempsey Center, which he established in memory of his late mother to provide support for cancer patients and their families, is particularly dear to his heart.
Patrick Dempsey is also passionate about his role as a family man, being married to his wife, Jillian, who is a makeup artist and the founder of a clean beauty line. They have three children: Talula (21) and 16-year-old twins Sullivan and Darby. Additionally, he has nurtured his interest in race-car driving.
Response to the title
When he first heard the news about being named Sexiest Man Alive, Dempsey admits he was taken by surprise. He recalls that it took him aback and he started laughing, thinking it was a joke. He said he has always been the bridesmaid.
As for his children’s reactions, he predicts they will good-naturedly tease and find reasons to downplay his new title. He appreciates their youthful humor, saying, “Which is good, they keep me young.”
New movie
In December, Patrick Dempsey will showcase his racing skills in the biopic “Ferrari,” directed by Michael Mann, where he portrays Italian driver Piero Taruffi. This experience taught him a valuable lesson about taking risks, not just on the race track but in life.
Dempsey shares his journey of persistence and self-motivation, emphasizing that if you truly desire something, you have to take the initiative.
Despite the new title and accolades, Patrick Dempsey humorously comments on his collection of bumper stickers, T-shirts, and posters, quipping, “Does this mean he’s peaked? I peaked many years ago. But I’m still here.”
