Federal jury slams Trump with $83.3M payout in E. Jean Carroll legal saga

Judge, stan, legal saga

Former President Donald Trump was hit with a staggering $83.3 million judgment by a federal jury in the legal battle against E. Jean Carroll. This ruling comes on the heels of a separate $5 million judgment issued last year for sexual abuse and defamation.

The revelation prompted a jubilant reaction from Carroll, who embraced her legal team at the plaintiff’s table.

According to Kaplan, the verdict affirms that the law applies universally, even to the affluent, famous, and former presidents. He emphasized that resisting individuals like Donald Trump, who prioritize wealth and power over the law, requires courage. For him, E. Jean Carroll exemplifies such bravery and appreciates the jury’s support for E. Jean and the rule of law.

Earlier legal saga

The legal saga traces back to 2019 when Carroll went public with allegations against then-President Trump in The Cut and her book “What Do We Need Men For?” A previous New York jury unanimously found merit in her claims of sexual assault during a decades-old encounter with Trump when he was a private citizen and real estate mogul.

During his presidency, Carroll accused Trump of raping her in the mid-1990s, further alleging defamation when he dismissed her claims, stating, “She’s not my type.” This remark sparked a federal defamation lawsuit, leading to a prior judgment under the Adult Survivors Act, temporarily lifting the statute of limitations for sexual assault.

The recent jury decision, focusing on damages for statements made during Trump’s presidency, adds to his mounting legal woes. With 91 felony charges across multiple state and federal cases, ranging from hush-money payments to Stormy Daniels to mishandling classified documents in Mar-a-Lago, Trump faces a complex web of criminal and civil liabilities.

Notably, his hope to return to the White House may serve as a strategy to sidestep these mounting challenges.
