In a recent USA TODAY/Suffolk University Poll, former President Donald Trump is making waves, outpacing President Joe Biden in support among Hispanic and young voters.

The data reveals a notable shift in political dynamics, with Trump holding a 39%-34% lead among Hispanic voters and a 37%-33% advantage among voters under 35.

Biden camp worried?

The survey indicated that Pres. Joe Biden has been unsuccessful in solidifying support from certain segments of the coalition that played a crucial role in securing his victory in the 2020 presidential election.

These findings are causing concern for the Biden camp. To address this, the Biden administration has deployed Vice President Harris, the first Black and Asian-American to hold the position, aged 59 and a generation younger than the 81-year-old President, as a key envoy to university campuses, including historically Black colleges.

Young progressives express dissatisfaction with Biden’s limited action on climate change and voting rights. Although he attempted to forgive student loan debts, the Supreme Court blocked his efforts.

Voters preference

Adding to the challenges for Biden is the narrowing gap among Black voters. The poll highlights that one in five Black voters are considering backing a third-party candidate in the upcoming general election.

David Paleologos, director of Suffolk’s Political Research Center, emphasizes the impact of this trend on Biden’s standing: “Although Trump hasn’t grown support among Black voters, he has closed the deficit because third-party voters come off of Biden’s support among Blacks.”

The significance lies in the fact that a young voter or a person of color voting ‘third party’ shifts support away from President Biden, potentially benefiting Donald Trump.

As Biden aims to secure a diverse and unified base, these shifts in support among key demographics underscore the evolving dynamics leading up to the 2024 election.
